Daniel Rodriguez may have gotten his wish this year. The president of The Association of American Law Schools said he encourages women, people of color and other minorities to seek work as deans.

Fawah Akwo worked as a senior software engineer at Oracle, where she developed customer relationship management web applications. A hallmark of her life, however, has been a devotion to helping women and children, especially girls. During her time in Silicon Valley, she founded a platform to enable youth in developing countries to organize and garner support for service projects in their communities. An advocate for women’s education, Akwo also founded and coordinates a “GirlTech” scholarship program in her home town to orient and nurture women students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Wayne State Law Jocelyn BensonJocelyn Benson’s commitment to civic engagement and an open, honest American electoral process runs long and deep. The dean of Wayne State University Law School in Detroit entered the fray as an undergraduate at Wellesley College in Massachusetts when she founded the Women in American Political Activism conference and became the first student elected to serve in the Wellesley town governing body. Lawdragon: What were key factors you used to choose your law school?

Aaron Horth: Because most of the schools I got into were roughly the same in rankings, I looked mostly at geographic location. I chose Boston because I wanted to live in a larger city and a place that I knew would be progressive and queer-friendly.

Stetson Dean C PietruszkiewiczChristopher Pietruszkiewicz, the dean of Stetson University College of Law, has spent much of his career at the intersection of education, business and law. He came to Stetson from LSU Law Center at Louisiana State University, where he was the J.Y. Sanders Professor of Law and where, as Vice Chancellor for Business and Financial Affairs, he was responsible for strategic planning, budgeting, financial planning and personnel matters. Before that he was a trial lawyer in the U.S. Justice Department’s Tax Division and an attorney-adviser in the U.S. Education Department.
